Ursolic acid is a pentacyclic triterpenoid compound extracted from bearberry, an evergreen shrub of the Ericaceae family. Molecular formula: C30H48O3,CAS 77-52-1,Molecular weight: 456.7,EINECS : 201-034-0.

Ursolic acid has a special smell and produces large and shiny prisms in anhydrous ethanol, while it produces fine needles like hair in dilute ethanol. Soluble in methanol, acetone, pyridine, insoluble in water and petroleum ether.

 

Ursolic acid is widely distributed in the plant kingdom. It is distributed in about 7 families, 46 genera and 62 species of plants in free form or in the form of glycosides combined with sugars, mainly in the leaves of Ligustrum lucidum of Oleaceae, the bearberry of Ericaceae, the leaves of loquat of Rosaceae, the leaves of Paulownia tomentosa of Scrophulariaceae, the whole herb of Prunella vulgaris of Lamiaceae, the leaves of Ilex ferox of Ilex genus of Aquifoliaceae, etc.

Ursolic acid has multiple biological effects such as sedation, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-diabetic, anti-ulcer, and lowering blood sugar. Ursolic acid also has obvious antioxidant function. In addition, ursolic acid can also exhibit its anti-cancer activity by inducing cell apoptosis, inhibiting cell cycle progression, inhibiting cell proliferation, inhibiting metastasis, and reducing tumor occurrence through multiple signal pathways.
