5-Sulfosalicylic acid is a sulfonated salicylic acid derivative. It is a white to off-white, hygroscopic crystalline powder that turns pink when exposed to iron and decomposes into sulfuric acid and salicylic acid at high temperatures. Soluble in water and ethanol, soluble in ether.
In addition to being used as an organic intermediate, it is also used as a biochemical reagent, analytical reagent and complex indicator, colorimetric analysis to determine high iron ions; determination of steel raw materials such as iron ore, coal coke, and limestone; and for cerebrospinal fluid testing, urine protein and iron ion testing.
